“I made your favorite dish, come back and eat
it.”
“Can you pick me up from the stores?”
“I have great news, come home early tonight.”
Ethan didn’t reply.
Ethan had never felt so ashamed.
But the facts were right there.
Chloe sent him a text.
“Ethan, I hurt a lot, is Sarah ok? You’re so nice,
and care for everyone!”

“Sarah must be mad at me, why not blame me?
You can’t fight over it.”
She said what she said.
Ethan felt disgusted for the first time.
He deleted the text and walked into the room.
He helped me pour water, he cut fruit.
The lawyer left the table, with the divorce
papers on the table.
I looked at his phone shaking.
“Why don’t you text her back?”
Ethan stopped in his tracks.
“Sarah, why?”
“I know I screwed up, but you know that I’ve

Before he could finish, I started laughing.
“Stop talking to me.”
“Do you want me to die?”
Chloe cried as she stormed out of the room.
I didn’t say anything, and Ethan didn’t follow
her.
“Why are you doing this to me?”
“You’re scaring me.”
“Since you can’t go anywhere, please.”
Ethan started pleading with me.
I just smiled.

He left the room.
I started making plane reservations, planning to
leave in a week.
I won’t be hoping for the best.
I’d only rely on myself.
Ethan started making long strides.
Chloe started slowing him down.
They met at the hospital doors.
Chloe cried into his arms.
“You’re going to leave her?”

“I want you to know that I’m never going to
abandon Sarah.”
“You’re going to have to find a new job, as
well.”
Chloe was shocked.

“You’re getting away from me?”
“Sarah, you’re going to ruin me!”
