Chapter 6
The medical staff were beyond pissed at
Brenda. They left to get ready for surgery.
I couldn’t pass up a dig. I leaned in, practically
spitting venom. “Better get those bills paid,
Brenda. Your precious angel is about to kick
the bucket.”

Brenda’s eyes were bloodshot. “Sarah! Did you
know the whole time?”
I put on my innocent act. “Know what? Oh, you
mean that your monster was born from
cheating? You’d had no other choice but to
abuse the brat?”
Brenda screamed, her voice cracking. “You
knew? You knew I was switching the babies!
Why didn’t you stop me? Why did you let him
get hurt?”
I just laughed. “Not my kid. Why would I stop
you?”
Brenda collapsed.
Without her consent, the transplant couldn’t
proceed.
Kevin survived. But he had half a liver, a
ruptured spleen, and two broken legs. He was

He was wheeled into a room. Brenda hadn’t
woken up yet. I was the first thing he saw.
“Aunt Sarah, everything hurts. Am I going to
die?”

I shook my head. “You would’ve been fine, but
your mom said no to the transplant. Now you’re going to be a cripple. You’re going to suffer.”
He was young, but the pain and numb legs
drove the situation home. His future was hell.
I left just as Brenda woke up. I took a final
glance at the two of them as I left the hospital. I
went home and gave Tom the news.
“Brenda’s a real piece of work! Beating her own
son! How could she?”
Tom was coming back from his second job, and
didn’t know what had happened. “That kid’s
rotten. She should beat the crap out of him..

I told him, “That’s right. It’s her own. Beat him
all she likes.”
Tom agreed. The look on his face before he
began to wash my son’s feet was very telling.
I was so happy to hear that I had ruined his life. Would he have washed my son’s feet if he knew
the truth?
But Tom soon got a call, and rushed out.
I watched him drive to the hospital.
I packed up Alex and went to my parents‘
house, then changed the locks.
I got a phone call from Tom. Not to ask if I was
alright, but to beg for money.
The hospital bills were astronomical.

I asked why I should give him money.
Tom coughed and mumbled something about
being tired of working to take care of me. Now
Tom said that the other woman said that it’s
because I spend so much on things that he
wasn’t able to put anything away. He also said
that I need to have my parents pay the bills.
I scoffed. “I waste money? Are you kidding
me?”
